It's more than coffee makers and toasters. Most appliances use electricity, and some have motors in them that allow mechanical movement. Appliances symbolize domesticity (or its opposite, with irony) and are used effectively to show how American values have changed in the last fifty years. Other appliances symbolize communication (like a radio, television or telephone) and some symbolize family life (like a Polaroid camera or a Super-8 film camera).
